“One does not meet oneself until one catches the reflection from an eye other than human.”
A sketch of Loren Eiseley tonight. He was my first literary obsession when I moved away to go to college. A naturalist, a poet, a scientist, a philosopher. He was a lot of things I thought I wanted to be when I was 20.
I love the photo this sketch was taken from, of him awkwardly hugging his cat, Night Country. In most photos you’ll find online Eiseley seems to be trying hard to look extremely serious and important, but cats don’t put up with that shit. It is impossible to feel like the most important person in a room with a cat in it.
And another page in the graphic novel, which again also has the (working) title of “Night Country”. A nod to Eiseley’s book by the same name. And now I feel like I might have to work the cat into it somewhere too. :)
